Conscious attention to words that move you.
Lectio Divina is Latin for divine reading. Coming particularly from the Catholic monastic tradition, Lectio Divina is the repeated reading out loud of a sacred manuscript. The process of reading occupies the mental mind while the energy and essence of the manuscript lifts the heart towards the transcendent. The repeated reading can bring one into a meditative state, bringing one into awareness of personal connection with the divine.
One my recent favorite reads is a book of blessing by John O’Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us. On several occassions I have traveled with this book while visiting friends who were in the midst of celebrations such as birthdays, new business, new baby, and new outlook. Each time I found an appropriate blessing to acknowledge the moment.
In mind of lectio divina, I particularly like the beautiful blessing for matins, the beginning of the day. I suggest this blessing as a wonderful sacred reading to seek connection with the transcendent through lectio divina.
Blessing poem by John O’Donohue
Somewhere, out at the edges, the night
Is turning and the waves of darkness
Beging to brighten the shore of dawn.
The heavy dark falls back to earth
And the freed air goes wild with light,
The heart fills with fresh, bright breath
And thoughts stir to give birth to colour.
I arise today
In the name of Silence,
Womb of the Word,
In the name of Stillness,
Home of Belonging,
In the name of the Solitude
Of the Soul and the Earth.
I arise today
Blessed by all things,
Wings of breath,
Delight of eyes,
Wonder of whisper,
Intimacy of touch,
Eternity of soul,
Urgency of thought,
Miracle of health,
Embrace of God.
May I live this day
Compassionate of heart,
Clear in word,
Gracious in awareness,
Courageous in thought,
Generous in love.
