Seeing Beyond Expectation to the Truth of the Moment
“When we let ourselves see only what we expect to see,
we view the contents of our own minds and miss what is truly before us.”
— Takashi Matsuoka, Cloud of Sparrows
One of my lifelong challenges has been learning to see beyond what I expect.
Expectation offers comfort. It gives the illusion of knowing, a sense of safety and control. But it also blinds me to what truly stands before me — the living, breathing truth of the moment.
Over the years, I’ve learned that when I pause and listen to my heart, something deeper opens. Beneath the noise of my thoughts and the limits of my expectations, I find truth waiting quietly, ready to reveal itself.
From that place of truth, I can see beyond my fears and assumptions. It’s not always easy. There are times I still desert myself, clinging to the comfort of the familiar rather than stepping into the uncharted. Yet, it’s often in those very moments of struggle that I’m invited to expand — to stretch my horizon of possibility and make space for the unexpected.
Sometimes, truth feels like a current of energy moving from potential into form, carrying me in its flow. When I surrender to that movement, I catch a glimpse of life’s quiet brilliance — how everything unfolds in perfect rhythm when I stop insisting on what should be and allow what is.
Truth is always larger than the “facts” and the fears combined. It holds them both and yet moves beyond them.
And in my heart, I can feel that truth — alive, steady, and luminous — opening my view to what stands ready for me, here and now.
So today, I remind myself: let go of what you expect to see. Look again, with the eyes of your heart.
Here’s to life — and to the adventure of truth unfolding within it.
